If you are one of those Texas fans thinking “there is no way Sark would get an NFL head coaching job after how bad our offense has been this year”, I’ve got news for you….not only could he, but he would potentially be one of the top offensive-minded candidates on the board.

Here is how I am breaking it down, based on what the current NFL head coach vacancies are, what jobs might open up, who the potential candidates are, and where Sark fits in to the mix.

Head Coach Vacancy

1. New York Giants (Former HC was Brian Daboll, Offensive-Minded)

   1. Team Notes: Jaxson Dart, their first-round draft pick and rookie quarterback, has shown promise. While it has been a revolving door in New York, this is an attractive spot for any candidate.

2. Tennessee Titans (Former HC was Brian Callahan, Offensive-Minded)

   1. Team Notes: The Titans are chaotic. But their owner Amy Adams Strunk, a University of Texas alum, will be looking for a culture builder AND someone to help their number-one-draft pick quarterback Cam Ward. Her previous offensive head coach did not have any play calling experience (Callahan came from the Bengals, where Zac Taylor called plays). I don’t think she will take a chance on that again, and will want proven experience.

Head Coach on the Hot Seat

1. Atlanta Falcons: Raheem Morris (Defensive-Minded)

   1. Why The Seat Is Hot: Quarterback Hell. Can you imagine paying Kirk Cousins over $100 million guaranteed coming off an Achilles injury, then reaching for a quarterback with injury history as your eighth-overall draft pick, bragging about your quarterback succession planning, only to bench Kirk by the end of his first season AND have your quarterback of the future out for the year with his fourth (FOURTH!!!) major knee injury. And for that reason… I’m out.

2. Cincinnati Bengals: Zac Taylor (Offensive-Minded)

   1. Why The Seat Is Hot: Another injury for Joe Burrow. Another lack of investment in the offensive line. Another wasted year. It doesn’t help that Taylor’s “blame the defensive coordinator” card was already used when he fired Lou Anarumo at the end of the 2024 season (we miss you, Lou).

3. Las Vegas Raiders: Pete Carroll (Defensive-Minded)

   1. Why The Seat Is Hot: Pete is a legend. But Mark Davis and Tom Brady are lying to themselves if they don’t see this season as a disaster. I think Pete will likely be asked to retire or step down, similar to how his tenure ended with the Seahawks after the 2023 season.

Head Coach on the Warm Seat

1. Miami Dolphins: Mike McDaniel (Offensive-Minded)

   1. Why The Seat Isn’t Hot: McDaniel has strung together strong offensive performances and wins the past few weeks. He clearly hasn’t lost the locker room, and his team is playing well for him. My dream scenario would’ve been McDaniel taking on offensive coordinator duties for Coach Sark at Texas. However, it looks like that might stay a pipe dream. If the Dolphins season falls off the rails again, then he’s back to the hot seat. But for now…hat tip to Mike McDaniel!

2. Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Gannon (Defensive-Minded)

   1. Why The Seat Isn’t Hot: Honestly, it might be? But the Cardinals are one of the poorest, and most poorly-run organizations in the NFL. I could see them giving Gannon another year or two in order to #1.) Prevent a buyout they can’t afford, and #2.) Give him the opportunity to draft his own quarterback. It’s clear Kyler Murray’s career with the Cardinals is likely done after the latest “soft benching”.

Coach Might Not Be On Hot Seat But Should Be

1. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Tomlin (Defensive-Minded)

   1. Why Would It Be Open: Their last playoff win was in 2017…it’s safe to say the Tomlin era peaked a long time ago, and was over the minute Big Ben left the building.

2. Buffalo Bills: Sean McDermott (Defensive-Minded)

   1. Why Would It Be Open: Did you know no head coach and quarterback combination has ever won their first Super Bowl after their first 5 years of being together? Hello year 8 of the Sean McDermott and Josh Allen era.

They Shouldn’t Be On the Hot Seat But There are Some Red Flags + Weird Vibes…

1. Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur (Offensive-Minded)

   1. Why Would It Be Open: Packers President Ed Policy has publicly stated he is opposed to lame duck years for coaches (like the Cowboys + Mike McCarthy last season). The Packers will either extend or cut ties with LaFleur in the off-season, depending on how the team + Jordan Love looks down the stretch and their playoff success (or lack thereof).

2. Minnesota Vikings: Kevin O’Connell (Offensive-Minded)

   1. Why Would It Be Open: This one will not open up this cycle, but I would be remiss not to mention the J.J. McCarthy gamble…It’s clearly not paying off, and the vibe is shifting in a very negative way. Vikings need to find their version of a Brock Purdy lifeboat, or it could get ugly in the future (also, a reminder that Kevin has NEVER won a playoff game).

3. Baltimore Ravens: John Harbaugh (Special Teams/Football Guy)

   1. Why Would It Be Open: Ravens fans love to complain about him (as a Bengals fan, I would kill to have him!). While my red flags were up at the beginning of the season, it seems like he will cruise to another division title. I’ll never understand why the Ravens would want him gone. Who do you even replace him with? Which leads me to my next segment…

Who Are The Top Head Coach Candidates?

The 2025 NFL hiring cycle was a really, really strong candidate pool. The 2026 candidate pool…well, there is no clear offensive guru like Ben Johnson, or seasoned slam-dunk-hire like Mike Vrabel, available. Here is who I view as some of the current candidates:

1. Robert Saleh: Defensive Coordinator San Francisco 49ers

   1. I view Saleh as the TEMU or Amazon version of Mike Vrabel for this hiring cycle. He doesn’t have the resume of Vrabel, but there is no denying the seismic drop-off on the Jets after he was fired. This season, his value to the 49ers is clear, as they are still in the playoff hunt despite everyone and their mother being on IR. He would be a solid hire in the right situation.

2. Jesse Minter: Defensive Coordinator Los Angeles Chargers

   1. He is a rising star and has done a great job with the Chargers defense, taking them from worst in the league in 2023 to leading the NFL in 2024.

3. Someone on Sean McVay’s Staff: Offensive or Defensive Los Angeles Rams

   1. Almost every cycle someone is poached from his staff…there are not a lot of names being floated out there, except Chris Shula, the defensive coordinator. However, it’s a safe bet to assume there is SOMEONE from McVay’s staff that will get a shot, or at least a few interviews.

4. Brian Flores: Defensive Coordinator Minnesota Vikings

   1. This one is a little controversial, because he is currently suing the league. But, there’s no doubt he was right in his analysis of Tua as a quarterback, and he has excelled in Minnesota. I would love Brian for my Bengals, or to at least see him get another chance somewhere else. His toughness and mentality as a head coach is missed!

5. Joe Brady: Offensive Coordinator Buffalo Bills

   1. Brady was a hot candidate two years ago, a lukewarm candidate last year, and this year….I’m not sure. But given there are few other offensive-minded options, it’s possible he gets a chance. He might even be encouraged to take a look based on the regression of the Bills this year. I think the Bills inconsistencies are due to the GM/lack of personnel, not Brady. Regardless, his name is not as “hot” as it once was.

6. Jeff Hafley: Defensive Coordinator Green Bay Packers

   1. He has been a home-run coordinator hire for Matt LaFleur, and his defense continues to improve. He has head coaching experience from the collegiate level at Boston College, and came to the NFL as a coordinator due to the grind of the college football calendar.

7. Jon Gruden: Former Offensive Guru, Current Media Personality

   1. Another controversial prospect. Look, we all love Gruden. But as long as he is in litigation with the league, and winning in court, they aren’t letting him back in.

8. Last but not least, Steve Sarkisian: Head Coach The University of Texas

   1. Sark is a culture builder, a winner, and most importantly, an offensive play caller. He has NFL offensive coordinator experience from a short stint with the Atlanta Falcons, and while it didn’t end great, it served as a stop-gap between his USC exit and getting his life back on track. Sark has proven he can win with multiple quarterbacks at multiple programs, and his scheme is similar to Kyle Shanahan + Mike McDaniel. The pro-style offense Sark uses is tough for college students to grasp, but is extremely popular in the NFL because of its quarterback-friendly nature.

Where Does Steve Sarkisian Fit Into All Of This?

Out of the eight candidates listed, five are defensive guys, two have lawsuits against the league, and one is potentially being shown the door from his current offensive coordinator role.

As I really look at the current openings, potential openings, and who the likely candidates are, why wouldn’t NFL teams want someone like Coach Sark? In my opinion, he’s second only to Robert Saleh of the current candidates on my list. With both current openings having rookie quarterbacks that will need mentoring and development, Sark seems like a great candidate for either.

Reading the Tea Leaves

Whether you choose to believe it or not, Sark wanting to coach in the NFL has real smoke. One of the first smoke signals came from Dianna Russini, when she dropped this nugget at the bottom of a report Friday night in October on The Athletic:

“I’m told that representatives for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian have let NFL decision-makers know that he would be interested in potential head-coaching openings, including the Titans.”

She then doubled down on this report the next morning with a tweet that shook College Gameday, and was refuted (somewhat) by Sark’s agency, CAA.

Cue the next smoke signal on Monday morning, November 17th, when fellow CAA member Desmond Howard posts an easter-egg filled, Taylor Swift style Instagram video with “TENNis balls,” alluding to a “mutual separation” between Texas football and Coach Sark. A few hours after the initial Instagram post, Des doubled down and shared the video to his Twitter profile, where it gained max exposure.

It is very peculiar that the formula followed was the exact same in both instances… Quietly drop the tidbit at the end of article/video. Post article/video to audience on The Athletic/Instagram. Then repost to Twitter hours later for more exposure.

While I can only imagine who the source is, I feel pretty sure we will have more clarity on this entire situation after Black Friday.

Final Thoughts

From Sark’s pro-style scheme to the NFL showing him plenty of interest in the past, the reports coming out the past few weeks are not just a coincidence or clickbait. With a newborn baby at home and the grueling demands of being a college football coach, I understand why the NFL interest would be there from Coach Sark. As a Texas fan, I would hate to lose him. But as a human who values my family life more than anything, I get it.

When I see social media accounts questioning whether Matthew Golden was a worthy first-round draft pick, I can’t help but laugh. If you are only checking the box scores, I can maybe understand why you might think that…but anyone who has watched him play these first 3 weeks knows the breakout is coming, and soon.

After Golden took the combine by storm with his blazing 4.29 forty-yard dash, Texas fans knew a first-round landing spot was inevitable. Outsiders were more wary…does his forty time translate to game speed? After the first games of the season, the answer is clear…YES, it does (see his average separation below for proof).

Golden had two separate opportunities to score his first pair of NFL touchdowns in Week 2, but the timing with Packers Quarterback Jordan Love was a touch off. Love missed the majority of training camp after undergoing surgery on his left thumb, and it is clear on the field that the lack of reps impacted their timing.

After a Week 3 loss against a staunch Cleveland Browns defense, Packers fans can take solace in Golden’s underrated progress. He was 4/4 on his targets for 52 yards; momentum on a great catch running at full speed caused him to run out of bounds instead of turning the corner to take it to the house (so close again!).

It’s honestly insane how close Golden is to breaking through. LITERALLY on the verge of a breakthrough!!!! But the beauty is in the progress. His Golden Hour is coming.

Quinn Ewers and Sam Ehlinger are often compared to one another. There are arguments to be made for both in terms of their place in Texas Lore. Sam has the Georgia Sugar Bowl, Quinn has 4th & 13. One thing they both have in common: they’re 3rd-string quarterbacks in the NFL, fighting to make the 53-man roster. With their first preseason games in the books, let’s see how they’re faring:

Quinn Ewers Roller Coaster Returns

It was an up-and-down day for Quinn, featuring a pair of “Welcome to the NFL” strip-sack fumbles. While he did make some gorgeous throws and lead two scoring drives, it was a bit of an inconsistent showing for his Dolphins debut (Watch Quinn's Game Recap).

While the stat line doesn’t tell the full story—dropped passes and an invisible offensive line did him no favors—it’s unnerving to be the 3rd-string quarterback and turn in a less-than-impressive game (5/18 completions, 91 yards, 2 turnovers). Life on the C-team means you don’t get the A-team receivers and support, but at the end of the day, you have to make it work in order to make the team.

My biggest and best takeaway from Quinn’s game? He came out of it healthy, even after taking some hits. My next best takeaway—it’s only his first game. No doubt, taking live hits for the first time after finally recovering from his oblique injury caused some timid throws and skittish feet. Fortunately, Quinn has two more preseason games to build his case for making the 53-man roster as Miami’s third-string quarterback. I’m not selling my Quinn stock yet…but I will be wearing my lucky Texas shirt next weekend, just in case.

Sam Ehlinger is Mr. Preseason

Sam turned in a solid performance on Saturday for the Denver Broncos (6/10 completions, 55 yards, 1 touchdown). As a 5th-year veteran in the NFL, Sam has always shined in the preseason and is used to fighting for his roster spot. However, this year might be his toughest roster to make, given the Broncos have a very healthy and stable quarterback room. This is something the Colts never had the entire time Sam was there—and still don’t have.

Sean Payton recently spoke on Sam, and had great things to say about the former Longhorn’s impressive physical and intangible traits. Payton’s comments come as no surprise to Texas fans, since Sam was one of, if not the most beloved Longhorn in the post-McCoy/pre-Sark era. We should all keep our fingers crossed that Sam’s amazing work ethic and consistent play when called upon are enough to secure his roster spot.

What’s Next?

Staying consistent at practice and being a great teammate will be critical for Quinn and Sam the next two weeks. An underrated cheat code to staying in the league for years to come is by simply being a great locker room guy (just ask Colt McCoy, 12-season NFL vet).

I know LSU holds the current title—deservedly so—but I have a feeling our former Longhorn wideouts are in for breakout years. By the end of the season, you will know their names…and not just because I won’t stop talking about them. ;)

Matthew Golden: Green Bay Packers

Matthew Golden is going to be a problem. He’s turning into everything you want in a first-round draft pick: productive on the field, first in last out, and engaging with the Packer community in a positive way. He’s trending toward being a Day 1 starter and the Packers’ WR1. PERIOD. The local beat writers can’t stop raving about him, and have been keeping Texas fans fed with all of their Golden content:

The early returns on Golden are amazing, and I know he’ll only get better as he settles into his new offensive system (which is why I drafted him to my Sleeper Fantasy Football Team). I feel so confident in Golden’s stock only rising because that’s exactly what happened at Texas. When Golden first arrived on campus via the transfer portal, he wasn’t penciled in as the guy—more like a depth piece and special teams ace.

Texas fans were sort of taken aback when we heard whispers coming out of training camp before the 2024 season that he was actually Quinn Ewers’ most trusted target. But even then, Golden didn’t truly get his shot until midseason, when Isaiah Bond went down with an injury. From that point on, it was nothing but bright lights and big moments—with 4th-and-13 being Golden’s lasting legacy at Texas.

Buckle up Packer fans, dropped passes are about to be a thing of the past as you enter your new Golden Era.

Adonai Mitchell: Indianapolis Colts

AD Mitchell was that dude at Texas. He made THE catch at Alabama, cementing Texas’s return to the big leagues and his status in Texas lore. Off the field, he was just as beloved, opening up about being a Girl Dad in the Players’ Tribune (the reason why he transferred to Texas was to live closer to his baby girl). As if his NFL Prospect Profile couldn’t get any sweeter, he posted a blistering 4.33 40 yard dash time at the 2024 combine. A first-round draft pick seemed like a done deal….until it wasn’t.

Despite teammates and coaches refuting the anonymous claims, Mitchell’s draft stock took a hit. He dropped from first-round lock to the 52nd pick overall in the second round to the Colts. “Anonymous Sources Szn” struck another victim.

His rookie year was a mix of highs and lows, with a revolving door at quarterback and a frustrated locker room. But Mitchell kept his head down and continued to work. He’s flown under the radar all offseason… until yesterday’s joint practice with the Ravens happened…

He went scorched earth on one of the league’s top defenses at their joint practice, and reminded everyone of what Texas and Georgia fans have known for years: AD is lethal on the field. I’m calling it now: this will be his breakout year. Not even an inaccurate Anthony Richardson or Danny Dimes will deny him now that he’s found his confidence! And if they want to keep their starting quarterback roles, they should look AD’s way every. single. time.

Xavier Worthy: Kansas City Chiefs

Worthy has already started to make a name for himself in the league after an amazing rookie season. He made flashy plays throughout the year, showing off his speed, and capped his rookie campaign off by becoming the first Longhorn to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl…EVER! How’s that for some Texas Football trivia?

With Patrick Mahomes growing tired of the Chiefs’ “checkdown hero” and “death by a thousand cuts” offensive approach from the past two seasons, you can expect the deep ball to X to become a major weapon this year. That’s exactly why Worthy is my WR1 on Fantasy Football. (Yup, I drafted 2 Texas wide receivers for my team. Hook ‘Em!)

Another reason I’m all in on X? Rashee Rice is facing a likely three-to-four game suspension, and Hollywood Brown is nursing another injury. There isn’t any option but X to be Chiefs WR1 going into Week 1. Cheetah 2.0 loading? I sure think so.

The Big Picture

Matthew Golden, AD Mitchell, and Xavier Worthy are in three totally different situations, but all have a real shot at making a huge impact on their teams. DBs and gamblers beware—fade them at your own risk.

After Jaydon Blue was drafted in the 5th round to the Cowboys, the Texas Longhorns completed the sweep: 5/5 of the 2022 Running Backs were drafted to the NFL. Each Texas-Ex is on his own path to make it in the league, and all have something to prove this season. Let’s break it down, starting with one of the best Running Backs entering the season:

Bijan Robinson

Bijan has had a buzz-worthy offseason, and it’s not because he called the world out for saying his name wrong the past 5 years (whoops!). He made the NFL Top 100 List for the first time in his 3-year career, coming in at #62 (let’s be real, he’s still way underrated).

This is a huge year for Bijan—he is eligible to have his 5th year option picked up at the end of the 2025 season, and could begin contract extension talks. Areas he’ll be looking to improve in order to maximize his value are in the passing game. Honestly, this should be a slam dunk, considering all Longhorn fans saw his new Quarterback, Michael Penix, light it up against us in the College Football Playoff Semi-Finals a year ago (too soon?).

I am praying to the Fantasy Football Gods that I’ll be able to draft Bijan in my Fantasy League for the second year in a row. But if I miss out on Bijan, I have a feeling this next former Texas back will be a sneaky steal in later rounds:

Roschon Johnson

Roschon has been getting tons of love from Bears media and top reporters like Albert Breer this off-season!

With Ben Johnson now calling plays for the Bears, I would bet Roschon feasts in the new scheme. Every running back that played for Johnson in Detroit the past 2.5 years has run their way straight into a new contract (David Montgomery, Jamaal Williams, & Jahmyr Gibbs eligible next year). It’s a safe bet to assume Roschon’s stat lines will improve. And for the gamblers that love longshots, don’t forget Roschon was a Quarterback first at Texas…expect a trick play or two dialed up for him during this season.

Jaydon Blue

Training Camp couldn’t come soon enough for Jaydon Blue to begin proving himself in his Rookie campaign. Blue was unfortunately the victim of “anonymous sources” voicing their opinion, calling him “borderline lazy” (Linked here ICYMI). It went a little viral, and Blue had some words to say about it:

1 week later, Blue is now being reported as shining through camp. Didn’t take long to show he not only belongs, but will be a major impact for the Cowboys on offense. If I lived in a state where gambling was legal, I would definitely sprinkling a bit of cash on Blue to be Offensive Rookie of the Year. With no major Rookie Quarterbacks slated to start besides Tyler Shough for the Saints, there is a great opportunity for Running Backs and Wide Receivers to win OROTY this season (also lookin’ at you, Matthew Golden).

While Bijan, Roschon, and Blue all have clear paths to the field this season, there are two more former Texas Running Backs that are living in slightly murkier territory:

Keilan Robinson & Jonathan Brooks

Let’s start with Keilan first, as there is a bit more clarity surrounding his current situation. Keilan was released by the team that drafted him last year (Jacksonville Jaguars), but he was picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles (UPGRADE!!).

Keilan will be fighting for a roster spot during training camp, but will likely find a home on special teams. Keep your eyes out for him when the Eagles kick off preseason on Thursday, August 7th, against the Bengals. Jonathan Brooks, on the other hand, will unfortunately be sitting out for the entirety of the 2025 season:

Almost went 3 full articles without linking a Schefty tweet, but here we are. There’s been very little reporting on Brooks this off-season. He only played 12 snaps in his 2024 campaign before reinjuring his knee, and it feels like the Panthers are keeping everything tight lipped about his recovery and future with the organization.

The good news for Brooks? He just turned 22, he gets a full 18 months to rehab and recover, and did I mention, he’s only 22???!!! Brooks is still so young, and will not have to rush his return timeline like he did last year. This could be a huge blessing for his long term career. I wouldn’t bet against Brooks—or any of our Longhorn Running Backs—this season.

Training camp is here, and I’m thrilled to start diving into how it’s going for our former Longhorns! Naturally, we have to start with an update on the most important and polarizing position: The Quarterback.

When Quinn Ewers fell to the 7th round, the jaws of every Texas fan literally hit the floor. It was the shock of the draft for me, even more-so than the Shedeur slide (which didn’t surprise anyone paying attention to the pre-draft reporting around Sanders). While Texas fans were left dazed and confused as to how he could possibly fall so far, we also began crunching the numbers of how likely it is for a 7th rounder to make an NFL roster (thank you Brock Purdy for giving us hope).

Fortunately for Quinn, he fell to the best situation for him. Mike McDaniel’s scheme is similar to Sark’s, which likely has given Ewers an advantage on learning the playbook to second-string Quarterback Zach Wilson. They are both newcomers to the Dolphins, and given Tua’s injury history, Miami will likely carry 3 quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Another huge checkmark on the “Yes” column of every Texas fan’s “Will He Make the Roster?” list.

Ewers put on 15 pounds to prepare for the NFL Draft, and has fortunately kept most of it on, reporting for training camp at 209 pounds (Quinn’s latest measurables). He also secured a brand partnership with a Stem Cell Treatment Center called Auragens in Panama…an alternative treatment he did not have access to in college.

So far, it looks like he could be Auragens’ best endorsement ever if he can stay healthy, because Quinn has flashed at training camp. While there is some reporting of up-and-down play where Ewers “looks like a 7th round draft pick” (Alex Dunlap, Orangebloods), the twittersphere is all aboard the Quinntavious Train. I don’t know about you, but I’m fully locked in to the Quinn Ewers experience once again. What can I say—the ups and downs make the ride more fun! As long as Quinn keeps flashing in camp and learning the playbook, he should be in great shape to make the team. We just need to pray the Football Gods keep him healthy.

I’m Michelle Lynn—Texas Ex class of 2016 and a lifelong fan! My entire family went to The University of Texas, including my 3 sisters. All my dad wanted was a boy to be a Texas Quarterback one day, but instead he got me—a football obsessed wild child! That’s the next best thing, right? ;)

From the time Vince Young was drafted to the Tennessee Titans in 2006, I have been obsessed with following the NFL. Starting in 6th grade, my dad would let me help him with his NFL football picks in various pools he was involved in. My sisters and I all began to learn how gambling lines worked, and loved following up with how our picks did. This lead to my entire family creating our own football pool, which we still do to this day.

Following the NFL was an amazing distraction during the dark ages of Texas football (which unfortunately spanned my ENTIRE collegiate experience…). I hated how few Texas players were in the league, but it seemed as long as our coaches were a cluster ****, it was stuck that way. But then, Sark happened.

Now that Texas Football is beyond back, I get to combine my two loves—Texas Football and the NFL—with Longhorns in the League. There are finally enough Texas NFL players for me to dedicate an entire substack to following them! I am so excited to chronicle all of our favorite professional Longhorns. This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and I’m finally making it happen. Hope you enjoy following along!
